For the best rates, availability and minimal queing be sure to book your rental car online before you go. The rates for booking in advance are far better then those offered to those who visit a rental desk in person. (known as “walk ups”). Availability can be an issue in peak season but once your online booking is confirmed you can be sure they will have the car of your choice or sometimes even an upgrade.

2. Book it Early

As with many budget airlines, car hire companies often increase prices with demand meaning the closer your pick up date is the higher the daily rate you will be charged. There is a diminishing return to this however and it will get to a point where no matter how far away you book the rate will be the same. We recommend booking about 8 – 12 weeks before pick up date…

3. Consider your Pick Up – Drop Off times

With virtually all companies car rental is charged per 24 hours or part thereof meaning if you pick a car up on the Monday @ 10am and return it the next day @ 10.30am you will actually be charged 2 days rental because you’ve had it for more then 24 hours. Plan your pick up and drop off times carefully even if you have to turn up an hour or so either side of the time you claimed when booking, most companies won’t have an issue with this.

4. Consider your Vehicle Type

Going to the USA? The temptation is to rent a colossal SUV given the surroundings but consider the current economic climate where fuel prices are at an all time high. If you’re renting for anything like a long period of time, and luggage space isn’t a factor, consider renting a compact or fuel efficient car where the miles per gallon of fuel will be significantly more favourable then its SUV cousin…

5. Read Before Signing

Its important you make yourself aware of all terms and conditions before signing the rental agreement. Most of the more reputable companies will be good at explaining exactly what and what you arent covered for. Examples include purchasing a tank of fuel at a discounted rate, purchasing extra insurance meaning in the event of an accident regardless of liability you wont have to pay anything and renting Sat Nav equipment.

Don’t let the points above put you off, renting a car while abroad is a hugely rewarding experience. It means you aren’t restricted to your holiday resort and gives you the freedom to explore places that tourists relying on public transport simply wouldn’t get to experience.
