My Holidays From Dublin Travel Guide – Greece
[wp_geo_map]Saying you’re going to Greece doesn’t exactly narrow it down. Are you taking a historic walk through Athens, or taking a relaxing holiday on one of the many Islands scattered through Aegean and Ionian Seas? Corfu, Crete and Zante are the most popular Greek island holiday Destinations.
Getting There
The three islands are served by their own airports and are generally small enough to not have to rely on public transport. Bus routes are frequent and reliable however with many drivers venturing off the established routes in to the towns if you ask them. Car hire is an increasingly popular way of seeing the most of your chosen island and as such advance booking in high season is recommended
Where to Sleep
Most package holidays are going to focus around the lively tourist towns where tourism is the only source of income for the local economy. Many apartments and hotels will be found here. Visitors preferring a quieter holiday should venture into the small hidden villages and towns on the islands which will all have guest houses on offer willing to accept weary travellers.
Where to Eat
The diet on the Greek Islands is legendary for being so healthy and nutritious. The subject of many studies it has been proven to have exceptional health benefits and high nutritional value. Hundreds of local fiestas happen every year and visitors are more than welcome to sample the local cuisine, wine and entertainment. Cheese, especially Feta is a huge part of the diet here. Local cheeses are also produced but are not as popular. Cooked snails are one of the most traditional dishes on the Islands with a more palatable selection of goat and lamb on offer also. The islanders themselves venture out quite late and as such restaurants and cafes will open to suit them
Where to Drink
Nightlife in the Greek Islands won’t disappoint…
- Crete – Raki, get used to saying it beause its a local drink produced and consumed by the locals. Usually given as a goodbye drink from restaurants and cafes. Hersonisis and Malia have huge nightlife scenes with everything from karaoke bars to super clubs offering all a tourist needs to unwind after a tough day on the beach
- Corfu – The number one party place here is the town of Kavos. Crammed full of tourist hotspots this town literally never sleeps. Everything from R&B to Garage can be heard walking through the town. Slightly less lively, but by no means timid, is Corfu town with its lively “strip” of discos and busy bars.
- Zante – Its big and brash but that’s part of Laganas’ charm. Its a seemingly ever expanding strip of clubs and pubs that go right around the clock. Not forgetting Zante town which has a something that will appeal to everyone, albeit on a slightly less outlandish scale
